Hosting FAQ

1.I have a _____ site, what package is right for me?

This is up to you to determine based on the target focus of your site. You may need the smallest hosting solution (ie, mini site for artist porfolio, student) or your own VPS (high traffic ecommerce site, video boutique)

2. Can I customize my own hosting solution with Protoactive?

If our pre-planned hosting packages do not suit you we can design one that does over the Proto-Mega package. Any below Proto-Mega cannot be customized size, bandwidth wise.

3. Can I purchase additional bandwidth/hard drive space as I go along?

Yes, you may upgrade whenever you please. Note that bills will be pro-rated to reflect the amount of time on the old package and the new package.

4. My site needs server side access (php.ini, http config), can I alter these settings?

Not for packages below the Proto-Mega. VPS's are the only solution for full server control on your end however we have many modules and hacks working on our Proto-Mega solution (ie, large file uploads through http, php5, php.ini initializing in folders, .htaccess controls).

5. What kind of widgets do I get when I sign with Protoactive as my hosting provider?

A full set of cPanel goodies ranging from server stats to web access stats, complete db control, client email/ftp. scripts, cron jobs, etc. A full set of cPanel plug-ins we offer are available for review at http://demo.cpanel.net:2082/frontend/x/index.html

6. How long does a transfer take from another host to Protoactive? Are there additional costs for transferring?

Usually the switch is dependent on the other hosts accommodating our request for transfer, and that can take up to 72 hours, however we have seen instant responses from larger hosts with good customer support. Protoactive has relationships with many other hosts to make transfers as painless as possible. When you switch to Protoactive from another host we waive the $20 set-up fee but domain name transfers are $15.

7. My domain name is hosted at Network Solutions/Go Daddy? Can I switch responsibility to Protoactive to consolidate my billing?

Yes, this is highly recommended so you don't have to deal with a ton of web bills. Our domain registration is lower than network solutions and Go daddy so it's also the smart way to go.

8. How can I pay?

Protoactive has a comprehensive billing system for all our customers that allow for account reviews, upgrade and additional order all online. Payments can be made with check, credit card or paypal using this system, available at http://www.protoactive.com/billing.
